Maharashtra registered a comfortable 8-0 win over Madhya Pradesh in the fifth match of the West Zone Qualifiers of the 70th Senior National Football championship for the Santosh Trophy, at Tilak Maidan on Saturday. They led 2-0 at half time.
In the first half, Madhya Pradesh had the first go but Abhilah Kale’s promising move was foiled by defender Shakti Singh in the very third minute.
As the match progressed, Maharashtra took control of the proceedings and surged ahead in the sixth minute through a deft placement by Raynier Fernandes off an assist by Aaron D’Costa.
Soon, Mervin Stephen scored for Maharashtra in the 37th minute.
Raynier could have secured his brace but was wasteful from the spot-kick.
Second half Maharashtra tightened the screws to pump in six more goals.
Shrikant Veeramalu made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute while Mohammed Shahbaz Pathan scored the fourth goal in the 68th minute.
Minutes later, Mohammed secured his brace while Mervin Stephen made it 6-0 in the 71st minute.
Aaron D’Costa made it 7-0 in the 75th minute and Shrikant Veeramaslluy made it 8-0 for Maharashtra in the 83rd minute
