Jyoti scores a brace for the Maratha Girls

One goal in either half see Maharashtra breeze past Sikkim at the Under 18 Girls National Football Championship at Raia, Goa.

The match between Sikkim and Maharashtra was an evenly contested game which saw strong midfield action and good attacking play from both sides. Maharastra took the lead in the 11 min through Jyoti Mehra who intercepted a pass and dribbled past two defenders while deftly placing the ball past the rival goalkeeper. 

 
As the match went on, Maharashtra settled down with midfielder Smriti Girish playing the central role in feeding the forwards with goal threatening passes. In the second half, Jyoti Mehra seized on one opportunity and made it 2-0 for Maharashtra. Akanksha Kandelkar and Jyoti combined well but Sikkim Goalkeeper Sindhu Dolma Tamang stood stall and exhibited some brilliant saves. The match ended in favour of Maharastra 2-0.
 
Durva Vahia the head coach said post the match, ‘The game was a well contested one. Our girls played really well. We missed a lot of chances, also the the Sikkimese Goal Keeper made some top drawer saves.’
 
In the three team group, Sikkim will play Haryana on the 7th Oct while Maharashtra and Haryana will play the final match of the group stage on 9th Oct. Group winners will qualify for the Quarter Final League stage which will also be played in Goa.
